Do Dham Yatra — The Sacred Journey to Kedarnath and Badrinath
The Do Dham Yatra is a revered pilgrimage that takes devotees on a spiritual journey to the holy shrines of Kedarnath and Badrinath in Uttarakhand. These two sacred dhams, nestled in the lap of the Himalayas, symbolize deep devotion, inner peace, and divine blessings. Every year, thousands of devotees undertake this soul-purifying yatra to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu amid snow-capped peaks and serene valleys.
The Do Dham Yatra combines the essence of spiritual awakening and natural beauty. Kedarnath, dedicated to Lord Shiva, stands amidst the mighty Garhwal Himalayas near the Mandakini River, while Badrinath, devoted to Lord Vishnu, lies gracefully on the banks of the Alaknanda River. Together, they represent Moksha (liberation) and Bhakti (devotion).
Divine Significance of Do Dham Yatra
According to Hindu beliefs, visiting Kedarnath and Badrinath cleanses one’s soul and leads to salvation. Kedarnath, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, is said to have been established by the Pandavas after the Mahabharata war, while Badrinath, one of the 108 Divya Desams, was discovered by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. Together, they form a complete journey of penance and devotion — the very essence of Hindu spirituality.
Best Time to Visit Do Dham
The best time to visit Do Dham Yatra is between May and October. During these months, both temples remain open and accessible to devotees. Summer (May–June) offers pleasant weather for pilgrimage and sightseeing, while the post-monsoon season (September–October) provides clear skies and stunning Himalayan views. In winter, both shrines close due to heavy snowfall, and the idols are shifted to Ukhimath and Joshimath for worship.
How to Reach Do Dham
The Do Dham Yatra generally begins from Haridwar, Rishikesh, or Delhi. From Haridwar, travelers proceed towards Guptkashi or Sonprayag for Kedarnath and then continue to Badrinath via Joshimath. The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport (Dehradun), and the nearest railway station is Rishikesh. Helicopter services are also available from Phata, Guptkashi, and Sersi for Kedarnath, and from Dehradun for both dhams.
Stay & Food Options
Accommodation options are available in Guptkashi, Kedarnath, Joshimath, and Badrinath, ranging from government guesthouses and dharamshalas to budget hotels. Food during the yatra is purely vegetarian — simple meals like dal, rice, roti, and sabzi are served at various rest points. Hot tea and prasad are available near both temples, offering warmth and energy to pilgrims.
Major Attractions During the Do Dham Yatra
Besides the temples, devotees can explore several nearby attractions. Near Kedarnath, visit Bhairavnath Temple, Vasuki Tal, and Triyuginarayan Temple — the mythical site of Lord Shiva’s wedding. Around Badrinath, explore Mana Village (the last Indian village), Tapt Kund, Narad Kund, Charan Paduka, and the Vasudhara Falls. Each place adds beauty and meaning to the divine journey.
